about

People tend to say you won’t make a difference all by yourself. This is an excuse borne out of laziness and fear. Every single human being can contribute a small piece of what might be a better future, and even seemingly small efforts can make a difference to other people. This song is about a person who made such a commitment, a person who risked everything he had to save people’s lives. Gino Bartali was one of the best cyclists of his era. He won the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia several times. During World War II, he smuggled faked documents in his bike during long training rides all over Italy. With these courier rides, he was able to save the lives of 800 Italian Jews from persecution. He is one of the many examples of what a single person is able to accomplish.

lyrics

Race this mile with your bike, precious cargo stashed in steel, selfless mission on the road to save their lives from certain death. Walked your way, fought your fight, overcame fear - righteous life! Won the French race and climbed up so high, ruled in the alps - peacefully! Ride – for their freedom, ride – to save their lives, ride – for your freedom, ride – for your life.
